A monastery isn't really a building set apart for monks and nuns — it's a way of understanding time itself. It's the practice of remembering that our hours don't belong to us; they belong to God.

What if the rhythms monks and nuns have practiced for centuries — silence, attentiveness, unhurried time — weren't only for a cloistered life, but for an ordinary one? A mother folding laundry, washing dishes, wiping little faces….a woman managing a full household, can practice the same sacred attention to time as anyone set apart behind monastery walls. The setting is different. The invitation to remember whose time it really is stays the same. It’s simply an attitude of the heart and mind.

At times, I find myself saying, “Back to my monastery - a place set apart - to learn that powerlessness brings blessings & that time is not mine, but God’s.
